Hi Reader I’ve been thinking more about aging as my 50th birthday approaches in a little over a month. When I was younger, I was a star athlete. I did gymnastics, ran track, played volleyball and basketball. In college, I took enough dance classes to get a minor (but they didn’t offer one). But motherhood, homeschooling, starting an online business, and the stress of frequent moves and of adulting have undone so much of this early foundation. I’ve been consistently inconsistent and plagued by long lasting but minor injuries since our third child was born in 2014. I’ve done yoga, pilates and walked 11,788,913 miles since Oct 11, 2017 according to my phone app. I love that I can look that up! Although 11 million looks impressive, my average is just 4877 steps/day. Which is good, but not good enough to ward off all the factors of aging. Last week I started reading the book, Move the Body, Heal the Mind, Overcoming Anxiety, Depression, Dementia and Improve Focus, Creativity, and Sleep by Jennifer Heisz, PhD. I’ve personally struggled with all of these things and have some family history of dementia and Alzheimers. The book reads like your favorite science teacher’s personal memoir, part life story paired with fascinating brain research for the lay reader and practical application. I really love this book. I’m taking down so many nuggets of wisdom and hard truths: “Because paying attention to the breath capitalizes on the fact that the mind can only focus on one thing at a time. Therefore, the more time the mind spends attending to the body (and its breath), the less time it has to worry.” p.3 “Sitting for more than hours reduces your brain’s blood flow” p.100 1 hour of brisk walking eliminates the effects of 8 hours of sitting. p.101 At the end of nearly each chapter she has a specific weekly exercise protocol she recommends from her research. As I come out of my own winter hibernation and emerge into my walking season, I plan to implement so much of her practices while continuing my yoga and pilates mat work. Here’s the affiliate link to my bookshop if you’d like to pick up your own copy of Move the Body, Heal the Mind. I’d love to know your biggest takeaways or your best tips to exercising consistently. Hit reply and let me know. Cheers, When you are ready here’s three ways we can help:

Hi Reader I’ve been slowly working on this online business dream for years in the little moments and occasionally the wee hours of the night. Next to parenting, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It undoes me at times. It's made me reach down deep into my fears, things I didn’t even know I was afraid of and figure out how to take messy action and be ok with it being messy. One of the things I’ve done to help get clarity in how to move forward is to be a part of a mastermind group. So far...
Hi Reader Sometimes you need to cut back some things in order to make room for new growth. Yesterday, I started helping prune the rose bushes in my mother’s garden. I’ve been doing it every year that I live close by since I was teenager. Every time it’s a bit hard to get started. There are new leaf buds everywhere, a tangled mess of last year’s tiny stems, and thick, old dead canes that are always really hard to get to. The only way to start is to start somewhere. Pick a cane and make a cut....
Hi Reader I’ve been working on doing hard things. Or at least hard things for me or things I’m scared of. My entire parenting, homeschooling and business journey has been filled with them. Designing my first website, designing my first client website, posting my first blog post, asking for my first testimonial, posting my first social media business post, the list goes on. Yesterday, I mentioned one of my focuses this year was on writing better emails. Another thing I’ve been working on is...
