✨ Daily habits and routines

Hi Reader

As my kids' schedules and routines start to take shape, I now have the opportunity to sort out where my daily habits and routines fit within the broader family schedule.

One thing I’ve experimented with over the years is what time of day is the best to fit in my daily exercise.

I’ve learned that I need to prioritize it in the morning or it may just not happen, no matter how strong my intention is.

Bonus: if I get it done early in the day, I have one or more quick wins and I don’t have to continue to try to fit it in somewhere later.

Right now on school days that looks like getting up at six, hopping in the shower, sitting down for breakfast, taking my oldest to high school if needed, then hopping on my yoga mat.

On the weekends on holidays, yoga usually comes first, followed by a daily workout and perhaps a walk and finally a more leisurely breakfast.

I experimented with the timing and frequency of yoga, walking, and workouts.

Daily yoga trumps the others.

If I do the others and don’t get to the yoga, I get sore and tight.

So I’ve learned to start with yoga.

It's also a great warmup if I have time and energy for more.

On September 1st, I started my fifth 30 day yoga journey of the year.

Here’s the link if you’d like to join me: Yoga with Adriene: Dedicate.

Next up, a daily strength, cardio or sprint style workout.

I’ve been on the lookout for a daily workout routine that doesn’t take too much searching/scrolling and that also works for my 13 yr old son.

Our new go to is Darebee.com.

I love that daily exercise and workouts are updated daily—prayers answered no need to scroll = less apt to get distracted.

Simple line drawings and animations for the exercises plus modern clean design = daily inspiration to keep moving and creating!

Next, walking, this is the one that has to be flexible.

The times I walk have to fit around so many variables.

I want to make walking as enjoyable as possible so I continue to look forward to it rather than dread it.

So weather and temperatures tend to be a driving factor.

This year we’ve added going to the park on our homeschool schedule.

Rather than sitting around socializing as I did in past years with other homeschool groups, this year I’m staying active with them, walking, working out while the kids play or joining them tossing the frisbee around.

There are so many parks to explore in our new town, but luckily we have found our favorite so far and it's just a short 7 minute drive.

Another flexible daily practice is reading. If time allows, I do it right after exercising.

If not, I always have a book with me and read a few pages while waiting for kids at their activities.

I’ve also moved when I do Duolingo.

This is the app I currently use for learning Spanish and chess practice.

I used to do it last thing at night while waiting for my little guy to settle down and get sleepy.

Since moving up bed time significantly to better prepare for our early mornings I didn’t want to be staring a screen last thing.

So now it’s the first thing I do in the afternoons after school is finished for the day.

Finally, we wrap up the day with a read-aloud novel.

Our current read is Peter Duck by Arthur Ransom.

We’re about three-fourths through and just about to find out if they find buried treasure…

I love that I’ve learned to experiment and be flexible with my own daily habits, to see what works best given the season and circumstances.

I love that I can rearrange things to better serve me and also that I can easily pick back up the practice even if I miss a day or more.

Additional habits I’m working on making daily are emails to you lovely people and other writing practices plus seeking out design inspiration.

I can’t wait to continue to work on adding these to my daily routines.

I’d love to know what habits you are working on and how your routine is changing as we move from summer to fall. Hit reply and let me know.

Cheers,

Hi Reader Black Friday is just around the corner. I'm sure you have been hearing about it all month as many of the deals are already turned on or will be shortly! There are some great deals to be had, especially if it's the right time in your business journey to implement them. In the past I’ve been guilty of jumping on a deal in the moment but then it proved to only muddle up my business by sidetracking my attention. I know I’m not the only one (wink-wink). Growing a business is full of...

Hi Reader Yesterday was Squarespace's annual Circle Day conference for web designers. It was a great day with so many inspiring sessions. My biggest takeaway, they are thoughtfully investing in AI and platform improvements to enhance the user experience and make building websites faster and more intuitive. They also gave everyone a first glimpse at their new finish level tools that will allow for numerous animations with tons of granular control and layers and stacks which allow you to fix...
